How do dogs drink water?

Posted by Fast Fire Fish in

Ever watched a dog drink water from a bowl and was thinking man it must be tiring to drink water with just that little tongue. Apparently, dog's tongue construct is quite different from us as human beings in the sense that they can exercise more flexibility. Lets see what I meant....

This is one of the little things that we might see frequently but never bothered to find out about the actual in depth happenings of how that is possible. Hope you've learnt something new today. Cheers!

ok so dogs drink water by lapping it up with their tongue...my question is which way does their tongue curl when they are drinking does it curl down or up?

They drink water in a splashy, long tongued kind of way, but milk short-tongued and carefully.

Dogs drink water by curling their backwards. I mean by that is that they curl it slightly underneath their tongue instead of curling it towards the top of their tongue.

Milk is hard for dogs to digest. But I would guess its because milk is different than what they're used to drinking so they're slower about it. It probably varies from dog to dog though.

Every time my dog drinks wate, she gags and chokes for minutes after. She doesn't do this when she eats, and she doesn't do it any other time. She gags and chokes and coughs every single time, without fail. Any ideas? For a while I was thinking kennel cough, that's exactly what it sounds like, but the vet said she was healthy, and this has been going on for months anyway.

I saw it once and it made me almost sick. May be the dog lacks some vitamins and minerals althought he eats dog's food with contains all these stuff.

Get a Drinkwell water dish. It runs like a faucet. My Dogs love it! PetsMart carries it. You can also get an extra tank to attach to it. It's really cool.this post is very good for drink water.

I have a dog that actually does close to what you describe, she sticks her snout all the way in and as near as we can tell she starts swallowing with her mouth all the way underwater rather than sucking it in.

ou cannot persuade your dog to drink water, you have a real problem on your hands and you need to get her to a vet very quickly. A sick dog can go for a period of time without food, but water is absolutely necessary. The humble chicken broth has saved the day for my dog many times. Try it!
